How to Obtain a Cluster Account

  • Talk to your research advisor
  • Have your research advisor contact Richard Jones (richard.t.jones at uconn.edu) requesting an account
  • You will first receive an e-mail containing your username
    • Usernames will usually be composed of the first letter(s) of the first name followed by the full last name (John Graunt: jgraunt, Rainer Maria Rilke: rmrilke)
  • A follow-up e-mail will be sent containing the rest of your login information

Updating the password

  • It is strongly recommended that you change your password to a strong password that you can remember.
    • Use uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols such as !, @, #, $, etc to strengthen your password. Tips: Replace an 'S' with $ or a 1 or l with !. An 'A' can be 4 and an 'a' can be @.
    • Once you login through terminal using the username and password provided, type the command kpasswd.
      • Notice the k at the beginning of the command.
    • Follow the messages in the terminal window
      • Note: There is a minimum password lifetime which may prevent you from changing your password.
      • If you cannot change your password, the output from kpasswd will tell you when you can.
